Description The structure of chromosome territory 17 in interphase nuclei was investigated using 3D FISH and 5 DNA probes. 3D positions of the corresponding signals were determined for approximately 30-40 nuclei of Go and stimulated lymphocytes. Individual territories were then superimposed one over another in such a way that signals of the same probe were as close together as possible. The results were compared with those obtained from randomly generated points in 3D space. Optimal positioning of chromosome territories showed for the first time non-random 3D structure of interphase chromosome. It is pointed out that new mathematical methods for the investigation of the chromosome structure in interphase nuclei are needed.
