Description At present about 80% of hypertensive patients are treated by general practitioners in outpatient departments and the diagnosis of hypertension is the most frequent diagnosis at all. The care of hypertensive patients consists not only of treatment of their high blood pressure, but also of determining and influencing their total cardiovascular risk. Despite progress in pharmacotherapy of hypertension, introduction of new and efficient antihypertensives and proven benefit of blood pressure lowering, existing practice in achieving goal blood pressure (< 140/90 mm Hg) is still unsatisfactory. So which are the possibilities of a general practitioner in the treatment of a hypertensive patient.
