Description | My article aims to examine concept of displacement as a complex social phenomenon. First, I look at stigmatization as a specific personal or group displacement of the moral aspect in social interactions. Second, I deal with moral indifference in the distinct conditions of late modernity and with effects modern institutions have on particular day-to-day actions of individuals. I focus primarily on modern practices Giddens calls sequestration of experience, that are manifested both on the level of everyday practice and on the level of expert systems. Third, I explain the relationship between stigmatization, sequestration of experience and expert systems. This then brings me back to the moral indifference/moral displacement, particularly to moral displacement in seemingly neutral expert concepts. |
