Description The article proves that on the one hand speakers frequently use some interactive D-items to enhance the smooth flow of interaction and to create space for the exchange of ideas, attitudes and opinions with the other participants in a given communicative situatio. However, there are some differences between the individual D-items and also between the kind of reaction they prompt from the current hearer. On the other hand, the use of non-verbal reactions on their own on the part of the current hearer can often represent sufficient support for the current speaker to go on speaking, owing above all to the face-to-face contact between all participants.
