Description | The aim of this paper is to study absolute constructions in Late Latin texts dating back to the period between 6th and 8th century. The absolute constructions are of common use. The authors, however, show certain doubts in forming absolute constructions and sometimes are not able to observe the classical rules of using the ablative absolute. There is a tendency towards repeating the same structures; the authors use patterns formed on the basis of several predicative or absolute participles and a finite verb as a main predicate. It can be noted that the relation between predicative participles and absolute constructions is tighter than it was in classical Latin. One of the results of this development is the fact that the absolute constructions are sometimes used "instead of the finite verb" in the same way as predicative participles. The ablative of the gerund sometimes appears in absolute structures as well. |
