Description In this article, one of the first studies conducted in the Czech Republic focused on phenomenon of underachievement is presented. Aim of this research was to identify underachieving pupils and describe their personality traits and interests. Research sample consisted of 205 pupils aged 12-13 years. Following methods were used: Czech version of Meilis Analytic Intelligence Test (Smekal, 1972), Czech version of Junior Eysenck Personality Inventory (Senka, 1994) and Interest Inventory for Primary School Pupils (Hrabal, 1988). School achievement (marks from previous year) was also registered. Results proved the existence of underachievement phenomenon in intellectually gifted pupils. Differences in personality traits of these pupils were not significant. Higher rate of theoretical interests in intellectually gifted pupils underachieving in mathematics, natural sciences and geography shows on different interests of these pupils. The data give support for so called "overachievement" - phenomenon when pupils achieve enormously better school marks than is adequate to their intelligence.
