| Description | General conception of a Christian ruler is a feature which connects Cosmas' Chronicle (1125) with so called specula principis of the Carolingian Renaissance. The contribution deals with the idea of a perfect prince within the frame of Cosmas' description of prince Břetislav I. The author of Chronica Boemorum shows him as an ideal who should inspire future Bohemian princes. The literary basis of this concept was formed during the Carolingian age – we can find similar characteristics for instance in the work of Sedulius Scotus called "Liber de rectoribus christianis" (9th century). Such ruler derives his power from God and is first of all a "minister Dei", who (together with the church) fulfils God's will and leads the commended people. As Cosmas' direct knowledge of Sedulius work is not likely, the accentuation of identical princely qualities suggests that the Carolingian concept of a perfect ruler was still alive in the 11th century. |
