Description Every country has established its own legal and institutional frame of its labour market. The main goal of this regulation is protection of workers and to guarantee the right function of the system. This paper examines the institutional framework of the labour market in the Czech Republic. The paper is divided into two parts – methodological and empirical. The theoretical literature and its methodology is based on institutional aspects such as employment protection of labour, structure of wage bargaining, taxation of labour, active labour market policy and the system of unemployment and social benefits. We deal with the progress of the regulation of the labour market during the process of transformation and accessing the European Union and its impact on competitive strength. We use set of indicators such as strictness of the labour market protection, unemployment benefits and duration of providing these benefits, union coverage, level of the minimal wage or active labour market measures etc. for comparison. We find out that the regulation of the labour market is very difficult category to measure. To judge the dimension of the regulation is necessary to look at indicators not individually, but with complex view.
