Description An increasing number of chemical and biological substances are released into the environment every year as a result of industrial and agricultural activity (e.g., polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, pesticides and surfactants). In order to protect the public health and local ecosystems from the harmful effects of these compounds, efficient tools for their rapid detection are urgently needed. Currently, detection of harmful contaminants is performed using established analytical techniques, such as gas chromatography, liquid chromatography, and mass spectrometry. SPR biosensors for environmental monitoring present an interesting alternative to these conventional methods and offer numerous attractive features such as ease of use, low cost, portability, and the ability to perform detection in the field. Within this communication, we report a novel portable SPR immunosensor for detection of environmental contaminants exhibiting endocrine disrupting effects.
