Description The author analyses the caregiving experience as described in 29 qualitative interviews with adult people taking care of their parents. The analysis starts from the two main theoretical concepts on intergenerational relationships (the theory of intergenerational solidarity and the concept of caregivers` burden). Both of them seem to capture only a part of the caregiving experience which appears to be more complex, ambivalent and full of contradictions. The ambivalence and duality in lives of caregivers is documented on motives for care, on its impact on adult`s children life and on terminating the care. The recently discussed third theoretical approach of intergenerational ambivalence is considered as a valuable concept for understanding intergenerational relations. It provides the possibility to include both poles of caregiving experience simultaneously. The question is brought up whether intergenerational ambivalence in caregiving is a universal feature of adult child-parent relationship or if it is connected with specific socio-historical context which may highlight or inhibit the contradiction between private family life and public life.
