Keywords Irony - signal the ironic meaning - carrier - antipode - relator - context for the ironic utterances
Description The article follows the structure and function of ironic utterances in essays of Jan Lopatka. The essays analyse the Czech radio plays and serials broadcasted in the years 1978 and 1979. He captures utilization of both verbal and nonverbal media, which, together, signal the ironic meaning, that is the use of the carrier (Träger, pedes), antipode (Antipodus) and relator (Ralator) as defined in the studies of M. Nekula. Attention is also given to the importance of the context for the ironic outcome of the utterance. Irony is not used directly; the reality is shown, described and performed indirectly, which are the methods close to the means of expression of belles-lettres. This is the reason the investigation of various forms of iron is always not only the matter of linguistics but also, at least, the matter of theory of literature.
