Description Treponema pallidum ssp. pertenue, the causative agent of tropical dermal disease yaws can not be morphologically, serologically nor immunologically distinguished from subspecies pallidum, the causative agent of venereal disease syphilis. To elucidate genetic background of the differences in clinical manifestations of both diseases, complete genome sequence of T. pallidum ssp. pertenue was determined. For genome sequencing of Treponema pallidum ssp. pertenue Samoa D, comparative genome sequencing (CGS, NimbleGen), pyrosequencing (454 Life Sciences) and Solexa sequencing technology were used. Sequences of all three methods were eventually compared to the complete genome sequence. The size of Samoa D strain genome is 1,139,296 bp. Numbers of errors were determined in cases where data from all three methods was available (tpr genes were excluded). Lasergene software was used for processing of the sequences.
