Description Chapter 7 of the book Approaching the Other: the Four Projects of Western Domination. The chapter briefly discusses concepts and ideas developed by some of the most prominent thinkers within the dependency approaches to development. The chapter adopts the common division of dependency theories into (a) reformist or structuralist approaches and (b) more radical neo-Marxist approaches. It is followed by a brief discussion of unequal exchange concept and world-systems analysis. Underlying assumptions and policy implications of dependency and modernization - the two major bodies of theory informing the development project in the 1960s and 1970s - are compared in the final part of the chapter to find a number of importatnt similarities of both approaches. Those similarities are considered the characteristic features of the development project.
