Description The paper sets out to explore the discourses of development in contemporary India. In the first section the trajectory of development theory in India is briefly sketched and compared with development of mainstream development theory outside India. In the second section, based on the interviews with scholars from the five leading research institutes in India, four discourses of development are outlined. It is suggested that the strong support for the neoliberal discourse could be found in the history of economic development of India, especially at the time of independence, and it the relative success of neoliberal economic reforms.
