| Description | Conflict and reconciliation between the Premyslid Dukes: Althoug personal controvesries were not uncommon in the Czech lands of the 11th and 12th century, contemporary sources paid little attention to them, with only minor exeptions. However, rises and falls of Duke Sobeslav II (1173-1178) show that the Premyslid dynasty was thoroughly familiar with various degrees and forms of reconciliation. Intercessors (mediatores) were naturally respected. Upon their intervention, quarrelling dukes exchanged the kiss of peace (in osculum pacis). The guilty party scarcely repented in public, praying barefooted and in horsehair shirt to relict of saints. |
