| Description | Interviewing children as witnesses is heavily influenced by the knowledge of developmental characteristics of children, childrens motivation, and by the interviewers communication skills. Children tend to omit sexual information, and some children deny being part of sexual acts, even when there is evidence that abuse did in fact occur. However, when children do tell about sexual abuse, they tend to be accurate and may sometimes know even more details than adults. The developmental features discussed in this paper are language development and comprehension, childrens memory, suggestibility, understanding differences between truth and lies and false allegation. This paper offers some recommendations for interviewers how to make the interview developmentally adequate and how to improve the accuracy of childrens reports. |
