Description | The present paper seeks to examine the main purpose of using conjuncts. Certain conjuncts, in my view, only fancy up a text rather than contribute to cohesion as such. This use can be likened to an aesthetic function that some linguistic features perform when they are selected according to conventions of good style (Biber et al. 1999: 43) and contrasted with a textual function when they contribute to the formation of a coherent text (ibid.: 42). In addition, based on a sociolinguistic approach the paper will attempt to investigate possible differences in male and female use of connective elements under discussion. |
