Description | The memoirs contained in this book are a first-class source for understanding the transformation of the mentality of Czech society in the second third of the 19th century. It is not a summarizing historiographical image of the period but rather a highly subjective testimony of an individual person, who was willing to share only some selected points and events of his own life, which was, particularly before 1850, extraordinarily rich. And it was rich under any circumstances, whether the author played in the theatre, sold books or fought on the barricades, agitated and campaigned for the Czech thing and thus was observed and inerrogated by the police. In the end, this Moravian radical, whose ardent Czech nationalism was accompanied by strong anti-German sentiments, became a tranquil railway officer. Mikšíček in his memoirs presents to the reader unique insights into persons and actions in a texture of relationships and links that remained largely hidden from public view. The book contains also a comprehensive article on the personality of the author of the memoirs. |
