Description Patients with schizophrenia show symptoms of impaired episodic memory. Functional brain correlates of impaired encoding and retrieving information from episodic memory occur within the neuronal fronto-cortico-thalamo-cerebellar network. The key impaired structures appear to be particularly the areas of non-frontal cortex and hippocampus. Ventrolateral prefrontal cortex is considered the structure responsible for the ability to use semantic strategies upon encoding of new information into episodic memory which is impaired in schizophrenia patients. Functional brain imaging methods provide for the assessment of the impact of current treatment strategies on brain functions in relation to episodic memory.
