Description Bipolar disorder is a common serious psychiatric illness involving recurrent episodes of depression and mood elevation. Although the last decade has seen important advances in the pharmacotherapy of bipolar disorder, there remain substantial unmet needs in the management of this illness. Lithium, valproate and the second generation antipsychotics (aripiprazole, quetiapine, olanzapine, risperidone or ziprasidone) represent current emphasis of acute pharmacological treatment of manic episode. The acute treatment of manic episode of bipolar disorder should be choosen according to contemporary guidelines with regard to subjective tolerability and adverse event profile of specific drug.
