Description The aim of the paper is to compare different approaches to analyze polycentric potential in regional settlement system. The case study of Northern Bohemia region will confront strictly quantitative approach using national census 2001 data with more complex view based on the results of extensive questionnaire survey. While the preliminary identification of polycentric (reciprocal) relations within the region under investigation comes from job-commuting data analyses, the field survey enables more comprehensive understanding to perceived patterns of daily or weekly routines of local inhabitants. Regional-scale ad hoc investigation supplied information about non-work activities as well as the assessments of individually perceived regional polycentricity. Moreover, several deep interviews were supported by mental mapping methods revealing and explaining spatial routines on very individual scale. Combining various research methods, when approaching polycentric region, contributed to more plastic perception of polycentricity on the regional scale as well as enhanced a critical attitudes towards traditional contents of this concept.
