Exploring the Multilingual Classroom with a Mixed-Methods Design

Based on a dissertation project completed in 2020 (Schwarzl 2020, Cataldo-Schwarzl 2022), the lecture addresses the opportunities and challenges of a teaching intervention (six months) in two superdiverse multilingual school classes in Vienna and focuses on the methodology of the study: The intervention was observed using an ethnographic approach, allowing a deep understanding of the research field. Data from the pupils was collected in a pre- and a posttest questionnaire survey on their self-related beliefs towards their multilingual repertoire and competences. At the end of the intervention, semi-structured interviews with one teacher of each class provided insights into their perspective and positioning. A range of methods was used for data analysis: The questionnaire was analyzed with SPSS (mostly descriptive analyses), the ethnographic fieldnotes were coded into categories and transformed into a detailed description, and Viennese Critical Discourse Analysis was used for the interviews. The findings contribute to the research literature on translanguaging in that they show how translanguaging pedagogy can be both beneficial and harmful, depending on the extent to which linguistic competences are shared by other pupils and valued by teachers.
