| Popis | The chapter entitled "The Western Porch of the Cathedral of Le Puy: Construction and Staging of a Liminal Space" is a part of the book Migrating Art Historians on Sacred Ways, structured as a walk along pilgrimage routes. It presents firstly the landscape, followed by liminal zones, before leading the reader inside medieval churches and ultimately towards the sacred. The chapter about the western porch of Notre Dame of Le Puy is part of its second section, dealing with the question of the access to the sacred space. The porch of Cathedral of Le Puy, thanks to its unique spatial solution and the iconographies it encompasses, reveals its power to call forth associations with the mental concept of a threshold as a place of transition between sacred and profane, heaven and earth, and human and divine. This place constituted an imaginary borderline where thoughts of a beginning or fulfilment were evoked by various means, and the porch served as a great stage for this kind of pilgrim's or viewer's liminal experience. |
