Popis Oxidative stress, alterations in host immunity and inflammation may contribute to genesis and progression of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). We investigated relationships between malondialdehyde (MDA) as a marker of lipid peroxidation and parameters of activated macrophages, i.e. tumor necrosis factor alpha as a marker of inflammation and neopterin as a marker of cell-mediated immunity and clinical stage of HNSCC. Our results confirm the role of activated macrophages and the cellular immune system in HNSCC. In patients with activated T-lymphocytes, levels of TNF alpha inversely reflected the prognosis of disease. Although production of MDA in HNSCC patients is normal, it seems that activated T-lymphocytes contribute to lipid peroxidation.
