Description | Maps have become the general part of everyday life of people. They are irreplaceable aid in geography teaching as they enable pupils to find out spatial distribution of phenomena and the relationship among them. If pupils have developed map skills in an appropriate level then they can see the world in spatial context. This study presents pedagogical research focused on identifying of the development of map skills and the influence of attitudes toward geography on the level of map skills. The theoretical part introduces the map skills model. Firstly, the research was focused on the influence of gender on the level of map skills development. The results show that the level of development is higher by girls than by boys. Secondly, the research was focused on the influence of the work with geographic information systems on the level of map skills development. The results show that pupils working with GIS in geography lessons achieved higher score in the development of map skills than pupils who do not work with GIS. |
