The primary aim of the "CzechPolar2" Research Infrastructure is to provide background for top scientific research in both Polar regions; the results significantly contribute to the worldwide understanding of the global threats (climate change, ozone anomaly, sea level rise, changes in ocean, carbon and greenhouse gases circulation, biodiversity threat, etc.) and technological advancement. Further aims are represented by a continuation of the Czechoslovak Polar research traditions from the 1950s and 1960s and mainly by a support of the Czech Republic’s position and competitiveness in this field at an international level. Continual and valuable research in Antarctica led to the Consultative status for the Czech Republic within the Antarctic Treaty System since 2013. Continuation of this research is an essential prerequisite for preserving this highly assessed (and not easily acquired) privilege and instrument of the Czech foreign affairs. Arctic activities are much closer interconnected with mid latitudes including Central Europe due to the ongoing climate change. The Infrastructure offers a platform for a collection of relevant data. Besides, the potential of the Arctic exploitation rises recently due to the opening of the Northwest Passage, expanding areas of commercial fishing and mineral resources prospection on the Arctic continental shelf. In response to the scientific research further important aim represents the students’ education and training of young researchers. Both hosting institutions are faculties of science of renowned Czech universities; research results are implemented in tens of taught courses and study programmes. Also the support of clustering and interconnection of a wide scientific community should be mentioned as important output of this project, due to a large amount of organized meetings, seminars, workshops and courses.
