The objective of the project is to provide a comparative analysis of writer-reader interaction in
Czech and British novice writers’ English-medium academic discourse. Writer-reader interaction
is one of the dimensions of academic discourse marked by most significant intercultural
variation. As a result of globalization Czech novice writers have to produce high-standard
academic texts in English, yet their English-medium discourse is clearly underresearched. This
study will approach writer-reader interaction in Czech novice writer’s discourse from a corpusbased, intercultural rhetoric and discourse analytic perspective focusing on interactional and
interpersonal metadiscourse. The analysis will strive to identify variation in the use of
metadiscourse markers in Czech and Anglophone students’ discourse and to explain the social,
rhetorical and linguistic reasons for existing differences. The project outcomes (2 Jimp, 5 Jsc, 1
book chapter) will deepen our understanding of intercultural variation in writer-reader interaction
and can be used in the educational and professional domains.
