Description | Epidemiological studies have shown a higher incidence of diabetes in patients with schizophrenia. It is assumed that this is caused by many factors. Genetic factors for schizophrenia and diabetes are instable, but other factors can influence. These include in particular an antipsychotic medication and lifestyle of patients. More problematic antipsychotics clozapine and olanzapine are less risky amisulpride, aripiprazole, sertindole and ziprasidone. What is important is the possibility of developing diabetes and other think and periodically during treatment of schizophrenia monitor blood glucose and other parameters, such as body mass index, plasma lipids, blood pressure and pulse, and in addition, try to educate patients about healthy lifestyles. |
