Description The paper will introduce shared reading in English as a foreign language classes and its benefits for the individual young language learners communicative competence in a foreign language. The main attention will be paid to the development of reading comprehension strategies. The paper will focus on the pre-service teacher preparation in this area. It will describe how the 5th-year primary student teachers of the English Department, Faculty of Education, Masaryk University, are trained for shared reading sessions with individual young learners and how they learn to provide effective scaffolding.
