Description | Multilingualism is an issue that is currently focused on in expert discussions not only in many spheres of social life, but also in many scientific disciplines and research activities that grasp it from different perspectives accounting for various targets. Multilingualism is intensely discussed in particular in connection with the teaching of foreign languages because the development of the ability to communicate in more than two languages is one of the main goals of language teaching. This perspective of multilingualism is also dealt with in the research project "Multilingualism in the Czech school: learning and teaching German after English" (GAP407/11/0321), which is addressed at the Faculty of Education, Masaryk University, Brno. The present study gives an outline of approaches to defining the concept of multilingualism, which points to its multi-layer nature, and in more detail, one of its aspects is discussed here, which is the psycholinguistic foundation of the acquisition of multiple languages, emphasizing the different types of cross-linguistic influence. |
