Description | Our paper looks at the education of Roma children from socially disadvantaged backgrounds. The issue is well covered in research, education scholarship and the policy level. Nevertheless, we would like to ask whether Roma themselves participate in the education policy or whether they are an object of an interest and institutional power of decision makers in the Czech education system. We focus on the construction of the education of a Roma pupil from the point of view of Roma parents and Roma children. We collected our data through group interviews and techniques of the Theatre of the Oppressed (focusing on primary and secondary socialization of the Roma children). We adapted some of the techniques of the Theatre of the Oppressed to methods of discourse analysis - used also for the data analysis. Discourse analysis emerged from the ideas of constructivism and post-structuralism. In this paper, we aim to describe theoretical background and the main findings of our research. Lastly, we would like to discuss ways to apply our findings in schools. |
