Description When choosing a literary work for adaptation as a possible starting point for staging a theatre performance with an amateur theatre group, a question regarding its suitability for theatre adaptation arises. As a basic tool for the evaluation of a literary work for theatrical adaptation, it is appropriate to use the knowledge of literary theory and the analysis of a literary artwork, which helps clarify the individual categories and thus understand the work as a whole. Breaking the work into smaller units not only leads to revealing the theme of the work from which a stage play is adapted, the motivation of the characters and so on but it can also be a great source of information and inspiration for staging a play itself. The paper deals with literature as a basic starting point and a means for staging a theatre performance with an amateur theatre group. Based on the knowledge of literary and theatre theory and practice, it suggests a possible procedure for the analysis of a literary work which is adapted to a stage play, leading to answering a question related to the appropriateness of its theatre adaptation.
