Description Ozone is an important gas which absorbs harmful UV radiation in the stratosphere and thus protects living organisms, including humans. In the 1980s, a significant decrease in ozone amounts was observed, and even now, each spring an ozone hole develops over Antarctica. That’s why monitoring of the ozone amounts is still important and essential. Ozone amounts in the atmosphere can be measured by both satellite and ground-based instruments, the most accurate of which are spectrophotometers. The aim of this paper is to compare the daily mean total ozone columns measured by Brewer and Dobson spectrophotometers at two Antarctic stations, Marambio and Amundsen-Scott, over the period 2011–2015. These measurements agreed well at both stations (r2 = 96%), but the Dobson spectrophotometer at Marambio was systematically underestimating the Brewer measurements, while at the Amundsen-Scott Base, the Dobson measurements were significantly overestimated. There were several cases of statistically significant dependencies of the differences between the Brewer and Dobson total ozone measurements on solar zenith angle and total ozone column, but the explained variability never exceeded 3%. The detailed case studies of days with the largest differences between the Brewer and Dobson measurements indicated that these differences might be affected not only by high solar zenith angles and low total ozone columns, but also by the temporal variability of ozone amounts at the edge of polar vortex. These analyses showed that the differences in total ozone measured by individual pairs of Brewer and Dobson spectrophotometers depend not only on atmospheric conditions, but also on calibration factors and specific characteristics of particular instruments.
