Description | The study reconstructs a part of the hitherto practically unresearched Parisian sojourn of Václav Nebeský (1889-1949), an important Czech critic, aesthetician and the first theoretician of modern art. For Nebeský's successful career as an art dealer, the end of the roaring Parisian 1920s,'Les Annés Folles', and the year 1930 brought not only uncertainty of the rapidlly spreading and deepening economic crisis but also a strange public affair concerning the sale of a female nude supposedly by the painter André Derain, whose authorship had been challenged, to the Czechoslovak ambassador in Paris, the prominent politician and diplomat Štefan Osuský (1889-1973). There was also growing distrust on the part of compatriots regarding state purchases of French art by old and contemporary masters, pointing to Nebeský as a possible intermediary in many of these crutial acquisitions. It did not take long until first forced sales from Nebeský's private, qualitatively balanced collection of modern French art took place. Two months after the affair, he offered one of his more valuable canvaces, André Derain's "Head of the Girl" (1923), to the colleague and friend Antonín Matějček. |
