Description | Degenerative cervical myelopathy is a serious disease that arises from (usually progressive) compression of the cervical spinal cord. It is triggered by the development of degenerative changes - so-called cervical spondylosis, which affects bone, ligamentous and cartilaginous structures and leads to static or dynamic compression of the spinal cord and its vessels. This disease is currently underdiagnosed, even though it is the most common non-traumatic spinal cord disorder in people over 14 years of age. If not adequately treated, it can lead to irreversible disability of the nervous structures and manifest as severe impairment of mobility or even complete immobilization of the patient. The purpose of this monograph is to draw attention to the existence of degenerative cervical myelopathy and to summarize the current knowledge on the diagnosis and treatment of this serious disease. |
