| Description | Tumour demyelination is a rare form of MS, its differential diagnosis can be difficult, therefore other diagnoses such as brain tumour or abscess must be excluded first. MRI brain lesions larger than 2 cm in the long axis are highly atypical for MS. Also, the presence of significant edema or thickening of the ring or open ring character in such large lesions raises suspicion of other etiologies. In MS, this is a rare, so-called tumoriform form. The prevalence is reported by various sources to be 1-21/1 000 MS patients. These lesions are predilectively located supratentorially, and in more than half of patients this is the first manifestation of demyelination. Due to its frequent localization in the lobes and the extent of the lesion, it often manifests itself in more severe neurological deficits such as aphasia, hemiparesis or hemianopsia. Epileptic paroxysm may be the first symptom. |
