Description | Systematic monitoring in psychotherapy has the potential to increase the effectiveness of therapy. However, the therapist's personality, attitude to monitoring and skilfulness in working with feedback play a key role. To find out what experiences psychotherapists have with the use of monitoring tools, we conducted a meta-analysis of 45 qualitative studies on this topic. It resulted in a description of a number of ways in which therapists integrate the use of monitoring tools into their work with clients. These can be categorized into six areas: (1) obtaining clinically relevant information, (2) tailoring therapy, (3) mediating/facilitating communication, (4) improving the therapeutic relationship, (5) promoting client change, and (6) personalized use of routine monitoring. The results indicate that systematic monitoring serves not only to gain information about clients' current status and client change, but also as a communication tool that facilitates conversation about challenging topics. They also show that systematic monitoring promotes transparency in the therapeutic relationship and client engagement in therapy. |
