Description Staphylococcus aureus (SA) is one of the most common pathogens of wound infections. Virulence factors include the production of Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL). This toxin is encoded by the LukS-PV and LukF-PV genes and is responsible for the formation of a pore leading to cell lysis (epithelial and leukocyte). Infections with PVL-producing strains of SA (PVL-SA) are then associated with a severe progression and more frequent recurrence. The prevalence of these strains in the Czech Republic is still unknown. Between 2021 and 2022, we collected 322 SA isolates from wounds of both hospitalized and ambulant patients. Using PCR, we investigated the presence of genes for PVL production in all strains. We further subjected these isolates to retrospective analysis with respect to the clinical course of infection. We also examined the antibiotic susceptibility, biofilm forming ability and phage susceptibility of the isolates. We detected 17 SA-PVL isolates in the cohort, with a prevalence of 5.3%. All these isolates were sensitive to oxacillin. The isolates were biofilm producers and were sensitive to phage treatment. Our clinical data showed that more than half of the patients had a complicated progression of infection with multiple recurrences.
