Description | When we talk about fairness, we are interested in what freedoms people should have and how to distribute their responsibilities. The climate crisis forces us to think about how to share the burden of climate action fairly. This justice concerns the whole world and future generations. Unfortunately, greenhouse gas emissions continue to rise globally. Solutions based on national policies are failing. An unprecedented global problem needs to be tackled with a global instrument. We propose to use a market-based instrument and to price all fossil carbon emitted progressively over time so that it is paid for by the consumer of the carbon product. The increase in price will then be accurately reflected in products according to the carbon footprint. This will create a steady upward pressure for decarbonisation. The question of the fair distribution of the fees collected requires further investigation. |
