Description A difficult moment in the mathematics curriculum may seem to be the development of the correct idea of the number zero among first-grade pupils. Previous research has shown that not only pupils and students, but also some mathematics teachers have misconceptions about zero. The result is the incorrect introduction of the number zero in mathematics lessons. This phenomenon may subsequently contribute to the occurrence of difficulties in arithmetic for some pupils when they perform operations with numbers that include zero. The aim of the article is to present the results of a questionnaire survey that reveals the difficulties that fourth-year students of primary school teacher training may face when describing the procedure for introducing the number zero in mathematics teaching in the first year of primary school. In connection with this survey, the author points out the gaps that these students show in formulating the concept of zero as the number of the empty set. This study could become inspiring and useful for students of primary school teacher training and teachers at the first level of primary school.
