Description | Between 1550 and 1620, sermons on natural disasters and unusual phenomena were published, mostly in Prague. Their authors, Utraquist priests, reacted to current catastrophic events (plague epidemics, earthquakes, storms, floods, fire, famine, war, locusts), celestial phenomena or monstrous births. In keeping with the character of the time, the sermons also included scientific findings, micro-stories and songs or prayers. All sermons interpreted the catastrophe as a sign from God: a chastening scourge, a sign of the approaching apocalypse, but also evidence of God's fatherly care and love. In this talk I will explore the presentation of catastrophes and the oscillation of preachers between established literary topoi and individual authorial experience. I will also reflect on the role that climatic stresses and complex social situations of the time played and how contemporary society "responded" to them in literature. |
