Description Lecturers who teach German as a foreign language at universities all over the world as part of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the Austrian Agency for Education and Internationalization (OeAD) encounter students who sometimes have simple cultural interpretation patterns, which can lead to irritations in class. This article is an attempt to deal with these irritations systematically. To this end, the results of a data collection are presented in which OeAD and DAAD lecturers in the Czech Republic and Slovakia were surveyed using an online questionnaire and students in a focus group interview. Both groups answered questions about whether they had experienced irritating teaching situations and how these unfolded and were handled. Both teachers and students were then given the opportunity to deal with such situations constructively in the future.
