Description | From my own experience and from many assessment studies, the most common tools for assessing our students' geographical knowledge are didactic tests that rely heavily on rote learning. An alternative is formative assessment, which promises to increase student engagement in the learning process and improve teachers' understanding of students' needs. One means by which understanding can be monitored on an ongoing basis is through concept maps, which originated in the 1960s. Concept maps are a visual aid that pupils can use to organise the information they have learned, to look for connections between geographical phenomena and to monitor their metacognitive reasoning. They are based on the ideas of constructivism, structural cognition, meaningful learning and critical thinking. Plenty of studies have been published on their pedagogical potential and the pitfalls in their implementation, but few of them are related to geography teaching and none of them have come up with a coherent framework for their application to the formative assessment process. This poster will present a proposed methodology that I would like to contribute in my dissertation research to clarify the potential of concept maps as a formative assessment tool in geography classrooms. The scheme presented will focus on a design-based research whose participants will be secondary school students and their teachers. The aim of the research will be, among other things, to develop a methodology and model teaching aids that will help teachers and students to use concept maps effectively in formative assessment.
