Description | Many Czech and foreign researchers consider the topic of word problems to be a critical moment in the teaching of mathematics at the 1st and 2nd grade of elementary school. In connection with this fact, a wide range of professional publications focused on the sources of difficulties that students face when solving word problems was created. Some publications see the pupil's own graphic representation of the situation in the word problem as a problematic point when solving word problems. Following on from the results of the aforementioned researches, this article presents a study based on a survey that focused on the ways of graphical representation of word problems by students of the 4th year of teaching at the 1st grade of elementary school. The aim of the article is to present the results of the survey, which reveal the critical points of the described group of students in the creation of an optimal graphic record of the given situation in the word task. It can be expected that these gaps could be another cause of errors and problems of the students themselves in solving word problems in the future. This study could become a useful source of inspiration for primary school teaching students as well as primary school teachers in the described area. |
