Description | This paper focuses on the implementation of reading workshops in lower secondary schools in the Czech Republic, where such approaches are still uncommon. Reading workshops are structured activities that support reading, interpreting, and discussing literary texts, and contribute to developing reading literacy and building a reading community. Emphasis is placed on methodological strategies that foster student engagement, critical thinking, and collaboration. The study is based on qualitative research among Czech language teachers working with students aged 11–15. It explores how reading workshops are integrated into literature classes, particularly in the selection of literary texts, methods of working with texts, and encouraging reading reflection through discussion and writing. The paper also highlights specific didactic strategies, including individual and group reading, creative writing, and the use of digital tools. Special attention is given to developing critical thinking and supporting students with different reading levels. Finally, the challenges of implementing reading workshops—such as organizational constraints and the need for school–family cooperation—are addressed. |
