Description Cannabinoid compounds have been shown to produce antinociception and antihyperalgesia by acting upon cannabinoid receptors (CB)located in both the CNS and periphery. A potential mechanism by which cannabinoids could inhibit nociception in the periphery is the activation of cannabinoid receptors located on the primary nociceptive neurons. Cannabinoid receptor type 2 (CB2)- selective agonists do not produce centrally mediated effects typical of cannabinoids retaining agonist activity at the CB1 receptor. Thus they may have promise for the treatment of pain and inflammation without CNS side effects. In the present study we evaluated the immunohistochemical distribution of CB2 in the intact dorsal root ganglia (DRG) of the adult rat and its changes in the rat neuropathic pain model.
