Description | The paper enlarges an recently published (EJP 30 (2009), 1257-1269) undergraduate student project in non-holonomic mechanics by considering the rolling friction. In the original problem of coupled rolling motion the agreement of theory and experiment was demonstrated for the initial part of motion with the rolling friction neglected. As expected, the reality is such that the rolling friction plays a decisive role during the whole experiment. Extending the correspondence of the model with reality by considering the rolling friction, in this paper it is demonstrated that the model satisfactorily explains not only the whole period of the motion observed. The problem is solved using methods appropriate at undergraduate level of physics education. |
