Description In this chapter the basic principles of tertiary language methodology, i.e. the methodology of a second foreign language, are discussed in general. In the process of acquiring the first foreign language, we take up on our knowledge of the mother tongue but we do not dispose of any experience with foreign language acquisition. This situation is different for the second foreign language as we can connect to individual knowledge and experience we have already gained. On the basis of two textbook examples – Deutsch.com and Deutsch mit Max – the author analyzes the way how the textbooks develop the principles of tertiary language methodology.
