Mathematics as a school subject is often regarded as a field in which the truth is indisputable and will eventually be (re)discovered by everybody. Even if the variety of approaches employed by professional mathematicians in their creative research is recognised, mathematical facts taught at school are presented as the ultimate unquestionable truths, which might imply there is also a single way in which to teach them. However, mathematics teaching has been changing
over time, with complete overhauls taking place every few decades. The proposed project will look more closely at the influence of Western European and US-American views on the formation of mathematics education goals and methods in Czechoslovaki during the Cold War era. The project outcomes (2 Jimp, 2 Jsc, 2 Jrec and one monograph) will deepen our understanding of what modernisation of mathematics education during the Cold War era was meant to be and what impact it had on mathematics education in general.
