Malo Gourmelon, 1st year NMgr. D. student in Public Administration at IPAG Rennes in France.

What led you to choose Brno, for your internship?
Malo: Thank you for having us. Our university has a 25-year cooperation with the Faculty of Education at Masaryk University in Brno. Internships are mandatory for us, and I wanted to do something abroad. I reached out to our tutor Hana Delalande, who provided informations and helped facilitate my travel to Brno. I stayed here for 2 months.
Alban: Brno is similar to my hometown in France. I had never been to the Czech Republic and wanted to discover new ways of life.

What was your main responsibilities here?
Malo: Our main task was to promote French teaching in Brno schools. We did presentations about who we are, our city, and our region. We spoke about the cooperation between our universities, all in French. We also visited schools where students speak English.
Alban: We participated in promoting French culture.

How did it go?
Malo: Our visits to some schools were significant events for them, and we felt very welcomed. Hana Delalande, our tutor, introduced us to schools as native speakers. Our role was to help establish new partnerships between Université de Rennes and the Faculty of Education in Brno

“Our job was to help create new partnership between our Université de Rennes and your faculty to connect schools between Brno and our city.”

Who supported you during your stay in Brno?
Malo: Our tutor, Hana, handled all the planning and schedules, but we enjoyed our independence.

What about the French proficiency of Czech students?
Malo: The level of French among Czech students is impressive. Some Czech students speak French without an accent. Although classes at the faculty are not large, the students are very good.

Looking ahead, what are your aspirations for the future?
Malo: I definitely want to be a teacher.
Alban: I am not sure about my future plans yet.

Do you have any recommendations?
Malo: Keep promoting the French language. In the Czech Republic, most students think that French is very difficult to learn, but it is not more difficult than Czech.

“The teaching of French in the Czech Republic is declining. The Faculty of Education at Masaryk University seeks to encourage students to learn French through various initiatives and partnerships.”
